Sharing with you....thesis work of Meghana Gavireddygari ('20)!
“The process of art making is, consciously or otherwise, based on the past. Every material an artist uses in the creation of their objects- the canvas, the wood, the bronze- it has a history that far precedes the artist’s intentions. These histories are entrenched and influenced by historical processes like colonialism and imperialism. Materials hold within them a strong sense of place and occasion, that try as we might to not, we carry with us into our creative spaces- the very creative spaces that we aim to utilize in order to critique institutions built on our blood. The content of our work may be far removed from the history those objects hold, but the fact remains that we are held within the palms of a Western art making tradition.
Materials used in installation: cement, wood, turmeric, tea, paper, Khadi, Banaras silk, and ceramic (stoneware)."
